HEART Herning Museum of Contemporary Art

HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art is one of Jutland's leading venues for modern and contemporary art, set in the Birk Centerpark cultural area on the edge of Herning. The museum grew out of Herning Kunstmuseum, founded in 1976 in a former shirt factory, and reopened in 2009 in striking new premises designed by American architect Steven Holl, whose sweeping white forms have become a landmark in their own right. Its holdings are rooted in the town's remarkable link to the Italian artist Piero Manzoni, who worked in Herning in the 1960s at the invitation of local textile manufacturer Aage Damgaard, and the museum holds an important body of his work alongside changing exhibitions of Danish and international contemporary art. The airy galleries, sculpture grounds and neighbouring music and cultural institutions make Birk a rewarding destination for art lovers. HEART is open Tuesday to Sunday, with a late Wednesday evening, and is closed on Mondays; admission is 100 kr and free for visitors under 18.
