Helved is a tiny rural village on the island of Als in Sønderborg Municipality, in the Region of Southern Denmark. Despite a name that catches every Danish traveller's eye — it echoes 'Helvede,' the Danish word for hell — the hamlet is anything but infernal. It sits amid the gentle farmland and hedgerows that define Als, a short drive from the market town of Augustenborg and its baroque palace, and from the coastal woodlands that fringe the island's shores. There is little here beyond scattered farmsteads, quiet lanes and open fields, which is precisely the appeal: Helved offers a slice of unhurried South Jutland life. Cyclists and road-trippers pause mainly for the novelty of the signpost, then linger for the calm.
