Havneby sits at the southern tip of the island of Rømø in the South Jutland Wadden Sea and is the town's lively hub. From here the ferry crosses to the German island of Sylt, and the harbor bustles with fishing cutters, pleasure boats and travelers heading to and from North Frisia. Along the quay you'll find fish restaurants, a smokehouse and small shops where the catch of the day and the famous local shrimp take pride of place. Rømø itself is renowned for its vast, chalk-white sandy beaches such as Sønderstrand, where you can drive your car right down to the water, and for the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea with its seal banks and migratory birds. From Havneby it's a short hop to dune heaths, old sea-captains' farms and the island's charming villages. The town makes a natural base for hiking, cycling and exploring the national park, and the sunsets over the sea rank among Denmark's finest.
