Hasle sits on the western coast of Bornholm, a compact harbour town looking out over the Baltic Sea toward Sweden. One of the island's oldest market towns, it grew around fishing and, for a time, Denmark's only coal mining. Its most famous landmark is the historic smokehouse, whose row of tall white chimneys signals Bornholm's cherished tradition of smoked herring. The little harbour still bustles with pleasure boats, cafés and a sea-water harbour bath, while colourful timber houses line the narrow streets behind. Sunsets here are celebrated, glowing across the open water. Walkers follow the coastal path north toward dramatic cliffs and the ruins of Hammershus, or south past former clay pits now filled with mirror-still lakes. With its unhurried pace, salty air and craft workshops, Hasle offers an authentic taste of Bornholm away from the busier northern resorts.
