Handermelle is a tiny coastal village on the southern shore of Lolland, part of Vester Ulslev parish in Guldborgsund Municipality. First recorded in writing in 1454, its name carries the old suffix “melle,” meaning a stretch of light, sandy land. The real draw is the little harbour, documented as far back as 1552 and counted among six small havens strung along the coast between Nysted and Rødbyhavn. In 1634 a royal charter granted local farmers the right to ship goods from here, and fragments of brick found on the seabed hint at medieval trade. Today the mood is gentle and unhurried: weathered fishing huts line the quay, and the harbour belongs mostly to a handful of fishermen and beachcombers. Visitors come for the wide Baltic light, the quiet reed-fringed shoreline, and a genuine glimpse of Lolland's maritime past far from the crowds.
