Gjøl is an old fishing village in Jammerbugt Municipality, set beautifully on the north shore of the Limfjord facing the broad waters of Nibe Bredning. For centuries the community lived from fishing, and the scent of smoked herring still belongs to the soul of the place, where traditional smokehouses tell of a living coastal culture. The small harbour is a peaceful base for leisure sailors and locals alike, while low houses and winding lanes give the village a genuine, unspoiled feel. Around Gjøl a rich birdlife spreads across the low meadows and shallow fjord water, and the area is well known among birdwatchers. From the village a causeway and bridge lead over to the little island of Øland.
