Givskud Zoo is a combined zoo and safari park in Givskud, about 20 kilometres north-west of Vejle in central Jutland. It opened in 1969 under the name Løveparken — 'the lion park' — with lions as its only animals, and quickly grew into one of Denmark's most popular wildlife attractions. Asian elephants arrived in 1970, and today the park is home to more than 700 animals representing over 70 species.
The big draw is the safari experience: visitors can drive their own car along routes that wind through large enclosures, watching lions, giraffes, rhinos, elephants and many other animals roam in spacious surroundings. This immersive, drive-through format sets Givskud apart from a traditional zoo and makes every visit feel like a real expedition. The park covers around 120 hectares in total, giving the animals room and visitors plenty to explore.
Givskud Zoo is one of only ten attractions to have been awarded five stars by the Danish tourist guide Jyllands Attraktioner, and it welcomes roughly 325,000 guests each year. Over the years it has been home to several famous animals, including the western lowland gorilla Samson, who appeared many times on Danish television. An ambitious expansion under the name Zootopia has been developed to enlarge the park further, with its first phase opening for the zoo's 50th anniversary in 2019.
