Egeskov Castle (Egeskov Slot) stands near Kværndrup in the south of the island of Funen and is Europe's best preserved Renaissance water castle. Egeskov was first mentioned in 1405, and the present castle was erected by Frands Brockenhuus in 1554. During the turbulent years of the Reformation and the civil war known as the Count's Feud, many Danish noblemen built their homes as fortifications, and Egeskov rose on oaken piles in a small lake up to five metres deep, originally reached only by a drawbridge. Legend says it took an entire forest of oak trees to lay the foundation — hence the name Egeskov, meaning 'oak forest'. The estate has belonged to the Bille-Brahe family since 1784.
Today the award-winning gardens are a highlight, with a maze, a fuchsia garden and a classic Renaissance garden. The grounds also hold unique collections of vintage cars, motorcycles and aircraft, along with treetop walkways and playgrounds that make the estate popular with families. Plan around five hours to see it properly. Summer is best for the gardens, and weekdays are quieter.
Admission is 250 DKK for adults and 150 DKK for children aged 4–12. Egeskov lies at Egeskov Gade 18, 5772 Kværndrup; take the train to Kværndrup (about 1.5 hours from Copenhagen), then continue the final 3 km by taxi or on foot.
