Bredebro is a small town in South Jutland, attractively set on the Brede Å river close to the Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is best known as the birthplace of the shoe manufacturer ECCO, which Karl Toosbuy founded here in 1963 and which still shapes the town's identity and working life. Around Bredebro stretch flat marsh meadows, criss-crossed by dikes and drainage channels, where thousands of migratory birds pause each spring and autumn. The area's village churches, characteristic red-brick houses and unhurried atmosphere offer an authentic glimpse of South Jutland country life. From here it is easy to reach the town of Tønder with its renowned lacemaking tradition, picturesque Møgeltønder and the tidal flats of the North Sea. Bredebro makes a fine base for cycling and walking through a landscape where the sky feels endless and nature takes centre stage.
