The University of Copenhagen Botanical Garden — known to locals simply as Botanisk Have — is a ten-hectare green oasis in the middle of the city and one of Denmark's oldest scientific institutions. Part of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, it serves research, teaching and recreation, and holds a living collection of some 13,000 plant species from around the world across its outdoor grounds and glasshouses.
The garden traces its origins to 1600, when a first medicinal garden, the Hortus Medicus, was founded by royal charter to safeguard Denmark's medicinal plants after the Reformation. It was moved twice before settling on its present site in 1870. Its most celebrated feature is the complex of historical glasshouses dating from 1874, crowned by the iconic Palm House — a masterpiece of iron-and-glass architecture.
Entry to the garden itself is free, while the Palm House costs 60 DKK. It is open daily from 08:30 to 18:00 and sits right by Nørreport Station, a five-minute walk away. Bring a picnic and settle on the lawn in summer, or step into the warmth of the Palm House when the weather turns — it is especially atmospheric in the rain.
