Augustenborg sits idyllically at the head of the narrow Augustenborg Fjord on the island of Als in South Jutland. The town grew up around the stately Augustenborg Palace, built in the 1770s in a pale, neoclassical-Baroque style as the seat of the dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg. The graceful palace church and the broad, symmetrical avenue leading up to the main building still speak of the town's princely past. Green parkland and old estate buildings spread around the palace down toward the water. Along the fjord lies a lively marina where sailors moor through the summer, and paths run along the shore and through the surrounding woods. Augustenborg is a calm, well-preserved place of cobbled streets, low yellow-washed houses and an unmistakable South Jutland atmosphere. From here it is a short hop to Sønderborg, the beaches of Als and the gentle rolling countryside of this quiet corner of Denmark.
