Anholt By is the only village on the remote island of Anholt, set in the middle of the Kattegat roughly halfway between Denmark and Sweden. Home to around 150 year-round residents, this cluster of low, weathered houses gathers near the harbour at the island's green, western end. Narrow lanes wind between hollyhocks and thatched cottages, past a handful of shops, a grocery, an inn and a small church, giving the place an unhurried, timeless feel. Reached only by the long ferry crossing from Grenaa, Anholt swells with visitors each summer yet never loses its quiet, castaway charm. From the village you can set out on foot or by bike toward Ørkenen, the vast lichen heath that covers most of the island, or east to the lighthouse and its lively seal colony. It is a rare place to slow down, breathe salt air and feel gently marooned.
