Ærø - Marstal and Ærøskøbing

Ærø is a small island in the Baltic Sea south of Funen, part of the South Funen Archipelago and one of Denmark's most beloved island destinations. Often described as the country's most romantic island, it is famous for its picturesque towns, cobbled streets and colourful half-timbered houses that seem to have changed little in centuries. In a 2010 survey by the newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad, readers voted Ærø the third most wonderful island in Denmark, behind only Fur and Læsø.

The island is centred on two charming towns. Ærøskøbing, in the west, is a beautifully preserved old merchant town with narrow lanes, hand-painted doors and a fairy-tale atmosphere. Marstal, in the east, has a strong seafaring heritage and one of Denmark's proudest maritime traditions, reflected in its harbour, shipping history and local museum. Since 1 January 2006 the whole island has formed a single municipality, Ærø Kommune, uniting the former Ærøskøbing and Marstal municipalities.

Life on Ærø moves at a gentle pace. Visitors come to cycle its quiet country roads, wander between thatched farms and rolling fields, relax on beaches lined with brightly coloured bathing huts, and soak up the timeless charm of its villages. It is a place that rewards those who slow down and take their time.

Ærø is reached by ferry from the mainland, with connections to both Ærøskøbing and Marstal. Once ashore, the island is compact enough to explore by bike or on foot, making it an ideal escape for a peaceful few days away from the crowds.
