Aalborg Waterfront

Aalborg Waterfront is one of Denmark's most successful urban-renewal projects, where a former industrial harbour on the Limfjord has been transformed into a lively cultural and recreational district. Anchoring the area is Musikkens Hus (the House of Music), which opened in March 2014 by the Limfjord and houses a concert hall and rehearsal rooms for the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Academy of Music, its solar-passive design facing the waterfront. Close by stands the Utzon Center, the last building designed by Jørn Utzon, the architect behind the Sydney Opera House; completed in 2008, the year he died, it sits on the Limfjord in the city where Utzon spent his childhood and was conceived as a meeting place for architecture students rather than a conventional museum. A third landmark, Nordkraft, is a cultural centre housed in a former power station. A promenade runs along the fjord with restaurants, playgrounds and open views across the water, making it a pleasant place to walk in any season. Access to the outdoor area is free, though the individual museums and institutions charge their own admission. The waterfront is an easy ten-minute walk from Aalborg railway station, and in summer the outdoor spaces come alive with events and activity, while the cultural venues run year-round. A local tip: take the small ferry across the fjord to Nørresundby for a different perspective on the harbour and the water that shaped the city.
